Snow Capped San Gabriels and the force of nature in the Station Fire burn zone

The following pictures were provided to me by a resident in the upper La Crescenta area. The first set were taken after the four days of rain from January 18th through the 22nd. The second shows the amount of material that have been re-deposited as a result of the four storms that passed through the area last week.
The last picture was taken two years ago...note how much material has built up at the base of the control channel dam.

Rainbows over Station Fire Burn Zone in La Canada

I caught these two shots shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday January 19th, 2010.
The shot was taken facing east and looking directly at the burned and eroding slopes of the La Canada Flintridge-based Paradise Canyon community. While the sun had briefly come out and the light showers created a fantastic rainbow viewing experience, the irony of these shots are that the homes located at the base of that same hill were and still are being evacuated due to the mudflows and water runoff coming from the approximately 4.5 inches of rain that has fallen in the last 48 hours. With another 8 to 10 inches of rain expected in the coming 48 hours, the chance for significant mudslides appear almost imminent.

Lakers Pre-Season Practice

I was lucky enough to go down to El Segundo last week to watch a season ticket holder only practice session for the NBA World Champion Los Angeles Lakers. Needless to say it was a great experience and after watching warm ups, drills and a scrimmage one thing is sure - Shannon Brown has got some serious hops! What did we learn? DJ Mbenga is the best shooter on the team thus earning him the nickname "Congo Cash".

The team looked good, Kobe made shot after shot during drills and Artest and Odom looked relaxed. Now its time to repeat. Props to Dan Patrick. Click here to view more pictures from the Laker Pre Season Practice session.

Luc's Wild Animal Tour of South Australia

Meet Luc, an avid wild animal expert from Los Angeles who recently took a trip to Australia. From the southern city of Adelaide, across the choppy ocean to Kangaroo Island, driving through the vast and red sanded outback, and finally through the Blue Mountains and down into the coastal city of Sydney - Luc observed, interacted, and kept his travel companions well informed on every aspect of the unique wild life that resides on the island nation of Australia. Take a moment to enjoy a few highlights from Luc's wild Australian animal expedition. To view the entire gallery click here

The Station Wild Fire Sweeps Through La Crescenta

With staggering speed the long dormant Station Fire swept north west and into the hills above La Canada and La Crescenta on Saturday August 29, 2009. By early afternoon, the flames which had stalled above La Canada for a couple of days crawled into the Upper Ocean View and Briggs Terrace communities through the night and burned right up to the edge of property lines - stymied by a lack of wind and more importantly the heroic efforts of fire fighters on the ground and in the air. The fires continued to burn around Briggs Terrace for two additional days, ending in a dramatic back burn conducted late on Tuesday September 1st that left residents and firemen breathless with its intensity.
